How places are chosen

Every entry belongs to one of three taxonomies and has to pass the same test for its group.

Hidden towns. A town, village or regional hub that is not the national capital and does not appear on the standard first-visit itinerary for its country.

Geological oddities. A natural formation that is rare in type, not just pretty: columnar basalt, sinkholes, salt domes, painted badlands, slot canyons. Waterfalls and viewpoints on their own do not qualify.

Forgotten ruins. A historic structure you can walk into without a ticket, a guide or a gate. If a site becomes fenced and monetised, it is removed.
