An 18th-century walled town on a ridge above the Alazani valley, with the Caucasus as a backdrop and Kakheti's wine villages below.

King Erekle II fortified Sighnaghi in the 1770s with a 4 km wall and 23 towers, most of which still stand; you can walk the ramparts on the western side. The town was restored in 2007 with pastel facades and wooden balconies, which gave it a reputation as a set, but the residential lanes behind the main square are unchanged.

The view is the reason to come: the Alazani plain 400 m below and, on clear autumn mornings, the full wall of the Greater Caucasus. The Bodbe convent, where St Nino is buried, is a 2 km walk downhill.

Why it stays quiet

Sighnaghi gets Georgian weekenders and wine-tour minibuses, but almost all of them leave by evening. Stay a night and the town empties; the walls at dawn are yours.

Khertvisi Fortress

One of the oldest fortresses in Georgia, a 10th-century keep on a rock at the meeting of two rivers, walked past by everyone on their way to Vardzia and entered by almost no one.
