Sof Omar Caves

One of the longest cave systems in Africa, where the Weyb river disappears into limestone and emerges 1.5 km later through a hall of columns, and a Muslim pilgrimage site for centuries.
The Weyb river has cut some 15 km of passages through the limestone of the Bale lowlands. The visitable section follows the river underground for about 1.5 km through the Chamber of Columns, a hall where pillars rise 20 m to the roof, and smaller galleries with bats and river-worn boulders. Sof Omar, a 12th-century Muslim holy man, took refuge here; the caves remain a pilgrimage site.
The Bale Mountains and the Sanetti plateau, with Ethiopian wolves, are on the same road.
Why it stays quiet
The road is the deterrent. A handful of vehicles a week come from Goba; most Bale visitors stay on the mountain.

Before you go
Local guides are required and are paid a small fee at the village. Wading is necessary in places; do not enter in the rainy season (April to May, July to September). Take a torch and shoes that can get wet.
