A schist village stacked like an amphitheatre into the Serra do Açor, where slate-black houses with blue-painted doors face a single white church.
Piódão sits deep in the Serra do Açor at the eastern edge of the Coimbra district, an hour of mountain switchbacks from the nearest town of any size. The village is built almost entirely from local schist: walls, roofs, stairs and the lanes themselves, so from the road on the opposite slope it reads as a single grey-blue mass with the whitewashed Igreja Matriz at its centre.
The blue on the doors and window frames is the detail everyone remembers. Local lore says a shop only stocked blue paint for decades; the effect is a village with one accent colour that nobody planned.
A footpath drops from the village to the Ribeira de Piódão and a small river beach, and the 3 km trail to the hamlet of Foz d'Égua crosses two suspension footbridges over a green pool.
Why it stays quiet
It is 90 minutes of narrow mountain road from any city and there is no rail or regular bus. The Aldeias do Xisto network gets day-trippers, but they concentrate on the villages closer to Lousã. After 5 pm you may have it to yourself.

Park in the small lot below the village. Two guesthouses and a couple of taverns; book ahead for weekends in October. No ATM. Mobile signal is patchy in the valley.
